ROLES OF URBAN WIVES AND NECESSITY OF SOCIAL EDUCATION

Abstract
This study is aimed at investing the sense of value and the leisure time of urban wives, Considering their shift of role and Contemplating How the institutions for social education can operate effective social education Under these circumstances.
1) Basic Characteristics of the Research Subjects. As for their age distribution, the age group of " 40¡­49 " takes 39.3% and that of "30¡­39" 34.0%, both taking 73.3% of the total. In their acadmic background, elementary school Graduates are 22.7% middle school graduates 21.5%, high school graduates 25.0%, and college graduates 19.8%, which shows they are generally highly educated while there is no one without any education. Over one third of the subjects are Buddhist followers and quite a conspicuous phenomenon is that 44.3% are atheists. The average number per family are 4.7 persons, which is almost as high as that of the urban family in our country. 2) Role of Urban Wives. Most of the families, 72.7%, have wives in charge of their children¡¯s education, while 20.3% have husbands in charge of their children¡¯s education. In 61.9% of the families, wives are preparing for the day for the family, while, in 36.4% of the families, each member prepares for his own day. Financial management is run by wife in 69.4% of the families, while, in 19.8% of the families, the couple are sharing finacial management with each other. This shows the fact 89.2% of the wives are directly engaged in the financial managment of the family. 3) Structure of Consciousness toward Family Life As a consequence of this, 67.2% of the respondents are proud of helping their children grow up, while 21.8% are pointing out it is worth helping their husband¡¯s social activities. This shows they have a somewhat traditional sense of value. Over one third of them, 37.3%, expressed the view that husband¡¯s understanding plays a vital role in family life, while 22.6% emphasized on having enough money to a certain extent. The higher academic background they have the more they are satisfied with their present life (elementary school graduates: 30%, middle school graduates : 38.3%, high school graduates : 59.3%, college graduates : 58. ) In addition, 51.4% of the respondents responded that they would like to give their children college education, which was also parrellelled by the responde own education of the research subjects, 46.5% put the purpose of the children¡¯s education on cultivating their ability to adapt themselves to society, while 35.2% on building up respectful personality 5.2% on finding better jobs, and 0.6% on meeting better spouse. 4) Utilization of Leisure The leisure hours of urban wives are between 10. to. 12 oclock in the morning and 2 to 6¡¯oclock in the afternoon durning which they spent most of their time on such mass media as radio, T.V, and magazines, while some sleep those hours away. 5) Programs of Social Education. Less than one third of the subjects, 28.8% of the whole, are engaged in social activities and activities of adult education and most subjects complained about the lack of the proper programs for them to take part in of the subjects, 82.0% are convinced of the necessity of the programs for the social education. Analyses of the reasons by the acadmic background reflect their eagerness to receive education for their children. Since the less education they have, the more interested they are in responding to their childrens education, (elementary school graduates : 52.6%, Middle school graduates : 45.8%, high school graduates : 35.2%, college graduates: 26.5%) It showed that they were obsessed by traditional sense of value and the more education they had, the more interest they had, in the development of individuality in the modern world, (elementary school graduates : 20.5%, middle school graduates : 31.9%, high school graduates 51.1%, college graduates: 61.8%). The analyses of the husbands reaction by the academic background showed that 59.2% of the college graduates, 42.0% of the high. school graduates, 23.6% of the middle school graduates, and 26.9% of the elementary school graduates left it to their wive¡¯s free will. And also, 66.2% of the whole responded they would participate in the education program in the event of its opening and the contents of the education they want are in the order of the improvement, general culture, leisare and recreation, beauty health, politics, econonics, and general current issures.
